Salt water soaks instructions for an Ingrown toenail

Nail Surgery 1 Week Post Op
Salt water soaks are often advised after nail surgery or for those who are bathing a active ingrown toenail infection to keep the area clean and draining. Whilst it seems a simple thing to do, many of us don't get it right. Firstly it is important to make sure the salt is at the right concentration and secondly, that the water is at the right temperature.
What you need:
1) 1 Tbs of salt per litre of water
2) a kettle with cool but previously boiled water.
3) a clean container or bucket big enough for the toe or foot.
Method:
1) Prepare a clean bowl. If you concerned about the cleanliness of your bowl, pre sterilise it with a product such as Milton sterilising tablets.
2) Add cold previously boiled water to bowl. Add freshly boiled warmer water to bring the temperature to body temp.
3) Mix the salt in
4) Soak feet or nail for 10mins
After soaking the feet, try to air dry the toe before applying an antiseptic and/or a clean sterile dressing such as primapore. Try to avoid all trauma to the area.
If the pain and swelling of your ingrown nail continues for more than week or shows any sign of infection it is advised to call our clinic on 8272 8755.
